The Caley Valley Wetlands in the Whitsundays is an internationally significant bird habitat, being home to an estimated 24,000 individual birds. It is most northerly nesting ground for the Black Swan and is recognised as nationally important habitat for the Latham’s snipe, the Red-necked stint, the Sharp-tailed Sandpiper and the Purple Swamphen. It also supports a population of national importance of the Australian Painted Snipe, which is listed as vulnerable under the EPBC act. Proposed coal port expansions at Abbot Point threaten to undermine this important wilderness area.
