Totem

The work 'Totem' illustrates four individual portraits inspired by a recent holiday to Victoria and Tasmania where artist Alex Stalling experienced vastly different environments built and natural to her regular home environment. The title 'Totem' refers to the relevance of the portrait being a reflection of the artist herself, the change in colour pallet and the introduction of new creatures to her design represents her new experiences.
The portrait of the animal is created completely in-situ as the artist does not mix the paint on a pallet but rather blends the tone directly on the picture. Her work focuses on the creature in particular the face, creating portraits of individuals not species.
